Marlborough College Malaysia - Brand Film & Content Suite

The brief

Marlborough College Malaysia commissioned a comprehensive film-led content suite to strengthen its visibility within a highly competitive international education market. The centrepiece was a cinematic brand film designed to make a strong first impression, supported by additional films focused on boarding life and a personal welcome from the Headmaster.

The films needed to communicate the school’s academic credibility, its direct connection to Marlborough College UK, and a clear sense of values. Central to the narrative was the Master’s philosophy, Work Hard, Get Involved & Be Kind, supported by themes of empathy, friendship, and meaningful dialogue.

My role

Self-Shooting Producer Director (Phase One)
Producer and Director (Phase Two)

I worked across two distinct phases of production, combining solo, documentary-style filmmaking with full-scale crew-led production. Across both phases, I was responsible for creative development, production planning, on-site execution, and delivery.

Creative development

I contributed to story development and narrative planning during an extended pre-production period in the UK. The creative approach focused on balancing heritage and modernity, positioning the school as both academically rigorous and emotionally grounded.

Rather than relying on abstract messaging, the films were built around lived experience, real voices, daily routines, and interpersonal moments that reflected the school’s ethos in practice.

Phase one, self-shooting production

The first phase focused on a Headmaster’s welcome film and a dedicated boarding film. I delivered this phase as a self-shooting producer director, working solo on location in Malaysia.

I designed and captured multiple interview setups with the Headmaster and students, alongside observational b-roll filmed in live school conditions. This approach allowed for intimacy, flexibility, and minimal disruption, while maintaining high production standards across image, sound, and narrative structure.

I handled all on-the-ground logistics for this phase, adapting schedules around school activity and capturing authentic moments as they unfolded.

Phase two, full-scale production

The second phase centred on the main cinematic brand film. For this stage, I stepped into a producer and director role, leading a full production crew over a two-week filming period in Malaysia.

I managed and directed a team that included an Assistant Producer, 1st AD, Director of Photography, 1st Camera Assistant, Gaffer, and Grip. I oversaw scheduling, crew coordination, contributor management, and on-set decision-making, while directing interviews with students, teachers, and families.

Visually, the film combined sweeping campus imagery with grounded, human storytelling. Premium camera systems and cinematic lenses were used to capture scale, texture, and atmosphere, while preserving emotional authenticity.

Post-production and delivery

I oversaw post-production across all three films, ensuring narrative cohesion while allowing each piece to serve a distinct purpose. The final assets were delivered for use across digital platforms, international marketing, and admissions activity.

Outcome

The project resulted in a cohesive suite of three films, each presenting a different perspective on life at Marlborough College Malaysia. Together, they communicate the school’s values, community, and educational philosophy with clarity and confidence.

The films have been deployed across multiple digital channels and international markets, becoming core marketing assets for the school. They position Marlborough College Malaysia as an institution defined not only by its heritage and facilities, but by its inclusive culture and commitment to developing the whole student.
