Kensington Prep School - Flagship Brand Film
The brief
Kensington Prep School (GDST) commissioned a flagship brand film to express its ethos, Growing Great Minds, through a cinematic and emotionally resonant piece of storytelling. The film needed to communicate the school’s nurturing yet ambitious approach to education, appealing to prospective parents while reinforcing pride and identity within the wider community.
Beyond promotion, the objective was to elevate the school’s brand presence, capturing curiosity, creativity, and emotional energy alongside academic excellence.
My role
Shooting Producer Director
I led the project end-to-end, combining creative development, production leadership, and hands-on shooting. My responsibilities covered concept creation, scriptwriting, storyboarding, shot-listing, location recce, casting, crew and equipment negotiation, on-set direction, and post-production oversight.
I worked with a small, focused team comprising an Assistant Director, Camera Assistant, and Runner.
Creative development
I developed the core creative idea around the spark of curiosity, a visual motif designed to link scenes and carry the audience through the film. This spark manifested as a subtle VFX element that travelled through spaces, connecting moments of learning, play, and discovery into a single narrative flow.
The device acted as both a storytelling mechanism and a metaphor, visually reinforcing the school’s philosophy of nurturing curiosity and growth. I wrote the script and storyboarded the film to ensure the VFX integrated seamlessly with live-action storytelling rather than feeling decorative or detached.
A key creative decision was to use a real pupil voiceover. I cast students from the school and guided the chosen pupil through the voiceover recording, shaping a delivery that felt natural, confident, and sincere.
Production and direction
The film was shot on a Sony FX9 with G Master lenses, selected to balance cinematic depth with flexibility across a live school environment. I planned the full shot list and managed the recce, ensuring the schedule respected the rhythms of the school day while allowing space for authentic moments to unfold.
On set, I directed both performance and technical execution, working closely with real pupils rather than actors. Direction focused on creating a calm, supportive environment that encouraged genuine expression, particularly important when capturing voice and performance from children.
I handled all crew coordination and maintained creative continuity across scenes, ensuring the VFX concept remained embedded in every stage of production.
Post-production and delivery
I oversaw post-production, guiding edit, pacing, and VFX integration to preserve emotional clarity and narrative momentum. The sparkle motif was carefully balanced to enhance storytelling without overpowering the live-action imagery.
Outcome
The finished film became a central pillar of Kensington Prep’s communications strategy, used across digital platforms and admissions activity. Parent feedback highlighted the film’s emotional authenticity and its ability to capture the warmth, confidence, and curiosity that define the school.
By translating Growing Great Minds into a clear, cinematic visual language, the film strengthened Kensington Prep’s brand presence and positioned the school as a leader in progressive, values-led education.
